Happy Trails! These are some of the balloons from Ray's retirement party. Thought they were appropriate, no? They were still floating, standing at attention like two soldiers waiting to give us their final salute as we departed. When we get home, they will no doubt be a little less perky.
All ready to start the trip...
First day on the road! We decided to change our route, due to the recent flooding in Pensacola and the surrounding coastal
areas, so instead of continuing on I10 toward Dallas, we veered north
near Tallahassee and headed toward Montgomery, Alabama. Good thing,
too. Today the weather around Dallas looks bad, so we
actually avoided two weather problems at once. A good start!
This is the first time Claire and Eric have ever been in a new time zone! Ray and I have, but for me, I was too young to even know how to tell time, let alone be concerned about suddenly having 25 hours in a day instead of 24. That's usually a good thing, but when you're driving and the GPS gives an ETA of 3:30, it is a little disappointing to realize that it's referring to local time, not the time on your watch. Ray drove the whole way today, so he's one tired camper tonight. I think he wanted to get that under his belt, so I'm sure tomorrow I'll be sharing the driving duties. Maybe at some point over our travels, we'll even let Claire do some of the driving. Stay tuned for that one. :)
We're staying in Calera, AL for our first "one night stand." This is a beautiful campground, and even though it was very hot today, it is gorgeous tonight. Our site had shade, a cool breeze, and a soothing view of the lake.
We had some interesting neighbors. One guy had the cutest little dog we've ever seen (sorry, Baxter, but even you would have said this dog was cute.) The dog was a "pomer-poo" with a little terrier mixed in for good measure. He would just cuddle in our arms, and be held like a baby for as long as we wanted.
Now it's Wednesday morning, and I'm going to sign off for now, as we're about to leave the park. I didn't have time to publish the blog last night because our heartsick daughter wanted to Skype with Noah and I lost use of the laptop. More later! (Update: technical problems prevented the posting of the blog this morning, so it's not going in until Wednesday night. Now I'm a day behind! But that's OK because we're going to keep this unstructured and non-frustrating. If it goes in, great. If not, we'll get it the next day. It's all good.)

Greetings from Tampa to our Happy Travelers. Even Baxter thinks that puppy is adorable; his face looks so much like Baxter's it's uncanny. All is well here. We miss you.
