Mount Rushmore, a rush of patriotism

Posting this one from June 27 a little late.  Once again, internet problems prevented it from posting, and I just today saw it sitting in the drafts file.  Phooey.

June 27,  Mount Rushmore!

After strolling through the historical / touristy town of Keystone, we went to the monument.  I had heard that there wasn’t very much to do at Mount Rushmore, but there was plenty to see and learn about.

I was so fascinated by the history of this place, and the sheer enormity of the undertaking, that I even bought a book about it.  I could've bought several more, and been happy to read every one of the them.

Below the monument is the Avenue of the States.

The above is one of my favorite quotes from George Washington, and part of the reason he was chosen to be immortalized in the granite face of Mount Rushmore.

Some very nice faces, indeed.  :)

Claire gave George a kiss!

I guess Ray didn't get the memo about this being a "funny face" photo.

This was at the end of evening lighting ceremony, after the speech and movie.  The ranger invited all military, past and current service, to go down to the stage so the crowd to give thanks to them.  It was thunderous applause, and went on for over a minute.  Think about that.  More than a minute of sustained applause for all those standing there, and all who were not there but were remembered.

Also, just look at how many people there are on that stage!  We are grateful for each and every one of them.
